If you’ve looked outside recently and noticed hazy skies or smelled smoke in the air, you’re not alone. Wildfire smoke from northern Ontario is affecting communities across the province, including Waterloo Region.
While you can’t control the air outside, you can improve the air inside your home.
At Aire One Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical, we’re recommending two proven indoor air quality upgrades that can make a significant difference during wildfire season.
Why Wildfire Smoke Is a Concern
Wildfire smoke contains extremely fine particles (PM2.5) that can enter homes through doors, windows, and even small air leaks. These particles may irritate your eyes, nose, and throat and can be especially difficult for:
- Children
- Seniors
- People with asthma or allergies
- Anyone with heart or lung conditions
During smoke events, Environment and Climate Change Canada recommends keeping windows closed and improving indoor air filtration whenever possible.
Solution #1: Upgrade to a MERV 16 Furnace Filter
A standard furnace filter helps protect your HVAC equipment, but during wildfire smoke events, a higher-efficiency filter can help capture much smaller airborne particles.
Our KMRF001 MERV 16 Furnace Filter helps capture:
- Smoke particles
- Dust
- Pollen
- Fine airborne particles
Replacing an old or clogged filter also improves airflow, helping your heating and cooling system operate more efficiently.

Solution #2: Install an iWave Air Purifier
Filtering particles is only part of the solution.
The iWave-R Air Purifier works inside your HVAC system to continuously treat the air throughout your home.
It helps reduce:
- Smoke
- Unpleasant odors
- Allergens
- Bacteria
- Viruses
- Other airborne contaminants
Unlike portable air purifiers that only treat one room, the iWave works with your home’s HVAC system to improve indoor air quality throughout the house.

- Replace dirty furnace filters promptly.
- Avoid adding indoor pollutants such as candles or smoking.
- If you need to be outdoors for extended periods, consider wearing a properly fitted N95 respirator.
